Menopause is often dubbed “the change,” but that term doesn’t quite capture the full picture. Yes, it’s a time when our bodies undergo significant hormonal shifts, but it’s also a period that can bring about changes in mental health, weight, and even our cardiovascular system. It’s a time of transition that affects not just female patients, but also their relationships.
Sexual Health: It’s Still Important!
Just because our hormones are on a rollercoaster ride doesn’t mean our sexual health should take a back seat. Data supports the notion that maintaining sexual health during menopause is crucial for overall well-being. Sexual dysfunction is associated with poor emotional health, decreased energy, and lack of social functioning. It’s also shown to relate to worsened relationship conflicts and medical conditions outside of the pelvis! Menopause can bring challenges such as vaginal dryness, decreased libido, and discomfort during sex. Dysfunction can be from desire, arousal, orgasm, or pain. If this part of your life is still important to you, there are ways to manage your concerns, ensuring that sexual health remains a priority.
The Role of Hormones: Not as Scary as You Think
For years, hormones were the big, bad wolf in the medical world, and I followed that path encouraging patients to consider alternative therapies and nonhormonal based therapies. However, as I’ve expanded my knowledge and pursued my NAMS certification, I’ve come to realize their crucial role in managing menopausal symptoms. Hormone therapy, when used appropriately, can be a game-changer, helping to alleviate a variety of symptoms from typical menopausal symptoms like hot flashes and vaginal dryness to decreasing urinary infections and potential helping to prevent cognitive decline (studies are still under investigation). Having more treatment options enhances personalized care and provides patients with a wider range of options.
